Manchester Unitedare reportedly on the verge of replacing their captain. According to David McDonell, a sports writer for The Mirror, the current leader Harry Maguire will be replaced by Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo during the games. McDonell points in particular to the not-so-good mood inside the English club caused by the lacklustre results in recent matches.

With a price tag of 80 million euros, Harry Maguire is the most expensive defender in football history. However, the England international’s performances have certainly not matched that value of late.

Maguire makes very frequent mistakes and his fumbles lead to unnecessary goals in David de Gea’s net. These shortcomings of the game are pointed out by sports journalists and experts, as well as Red Devils fans who are slowly losing patience with their captain.

Cristiano, on the other hand, is a big favourite at Old Trafford. At thirty-seven years of age, he is a playing legend and an unquestioned leader at the club he returned to after twelve years following his departure to Real Madrid. McDonell’s information was thus greeted with enthusiasm by supporters of the currently fourth-placed team in the English Premier League.

Maguire, however, has his position secure for the time being, as indicated by the words of coach Ralf Rangnick, who was clear in his press conference after the last game. “Maguire is our captain and I see no reason to change anything.”

But he points out that there is room for improvement even with the team captain. “But he is also a player who needs to improve like everyone else,” Rangnick is clear.

According to McDonell, however, both Ronaldo and Maguire had a meeting with Rangnick in which they discussed the role of captain. According to this reporter, Maguire doesn’t like Ronaldo’s influence on his other teammates too much.

But Maguire refutes the Mirror’s information. “I have seen a lot of reports about our club that are not true and this is another one. I don’t want to start writing about everything that has been written but I had to clarify,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

He also stressed that there is unity in the team and the club is looking forward to Sunday’s game at Elland Road, in which Rangnick’s charges will face Leeds United, who they beat 5-1 in the opening game of the new season. Ronaldo has not yet commented on the situation at the club.

For the time being, there is no indication that Maguire will not be on the pitch as captain on Sunday. However, further poor performances could make his position very difficult.
