The youngest Champions League captain in history? 17-year-old Moukoko became Borussia Dortmund’s leader for a few minutes
Borussia Dortmund played a great game against Manchester City in the next round of the Champions League group stage, but they didn’t manage to finish the game and lost 1:2. However, it is interesting to note that in the 88th minute, the only 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko jumped into the match and was immediately given the captain’s armband. This made him the youngest captain in the history of the Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund played a great game against Manchester City in the next round of the Champions League group stage, but they didn’t manage to finish the game and lost 1:2. However, it is interesting to note that in the 88th minute, Youssoufa Moukoko, only 17 years old, came on and was immediately given the captain’s armband. This made him the youngest captain in the history of the Champions League.
Hero Haaland – Dortmund were still leading Manchester City 1-0 with ten minutes left in regulation time when Jude Bellingham scored in the 56th minute. Borussia, however, looked very impressive, created plenty of chances and were simply very active.
But then came a great shot from just outside the penalty area and in the 80th minute the game was tied 1-1. The equaliser was scored by defender John Stones.
One could probably say that even a draw would have suited this match, but four minutes later Erling Haaland scored a very elegant finish from a fluffy centre from Cancela – 2: 1.
Dortmund couldn’t answer and succumbed to Manchester City. And the substitutions didn’t make any difference either, with Marc Reus replacing the still only 17-year-old Moukoko in the 88th minute.
And that’s where the big curiosity comes in. Moukoko received the captain’s armband from Reus, which he still intended to hand over to one of his teammates.
However, no one took it in the next few seconds, and Dortmund were in a hurry in their rush to equalise.
Moukoko therefore kept the captain’s armband and became probably the youngest player in Champions League history to lead his team in a match, albeit for only a few minutes.
