The WTA 1000 tournaments are going well for the Czechs this year. The next event in this prestigious category starts today for two of them
The Mutua Madrid Open is the fourth WTA 1000 event. In the previous three this year, two of the triumphs were won by tennis players from the Czech Republic. Barbora Krejčíková won in Dubai and Petra Kvitová in Miami. In Spain, they will both play. Today, the opening matches await another pair of Czech women.

Brenda Fruhvirtova
Yesterday we gave enough coverage to rising star Brenda Fruhvirt. Today, her sister comes on the scene. Even younger. Sixteen-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtová has received a wild card from the organizers and today she will start her ninth WTA tournament. Which is quite a feat in itself.
She’s struggled to find a match in the lower ITF categories. In that respect, it won’t be a problem in Madrid.
In the first round, the Czech will face Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, who will be the favourite. The 24-year-old tennis player has improved after a poor start to the year and has been making regular first rounds at WTA events since March. Not only that. She made the quarter-finals on clay in Charleston.
Markéta Vondroušová
The native of Sokolov underwent wrist surgery last year and her form is slowly picking up. At both WTA 1000s (Indian Wells, Miami) this year she finished in the eighth round.
Here in the Spanish capital, she successfully qualified. Will she enter the event today, where she has only appeared so far in 2021?
In this match, she will face the home team’s Marina Bassols. The 23-year-old is certainly not in great form. She has lost her last five matches, mostly to women in the world’s second 100. Markéta Vondroušová will play her opening match of the tournament this afternoon.
Other Czechs
Three of our tennis players have a free draw for the first round due to their ranking. They are the aforementioned champions from Dubai and Miami.
Barbora Krejcikova and Petra Kvitova. And Maria Bouzkova, who’s defending last year’s eight-place finish. We have already informed you about yesterday’s successes of Linda Fruhvirt and Karolina Muchova.
