The FIFA Club World Cup, as the official name of the tournament is, was founded in 2000. Due to financial problems, it was not held immediately the following year. The hiatus was eventually four whole years long, and the championship got back into full swing in 2005.
Not entirely surprisingly, the most successful club in the history of the competition is Real Madrid, who have won the trophy on four occasions. It is followed by another Spanish club and its huge rival Barcelona. The latter has succeeded three times.
The football event will take place in Morocco this year and will last 11 days. Specifically, between the first and eleventh of February and it is the last edition of the tournament to be played in the old format.
Representatives from six different continents are taking part in the tournament. However, there are seven clubs in total with the last place going to the host country. As the Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca won the African Champions League at the same time, the last place was given to Egypt’s Al-Ahly, who finished second
The other clubs taking part in the tournament are Al Hilal (winner of the Asian Champions League), Real Madrid (winner of the European Champions League), Seattle Sounders (winner of the North American Champions League), Auckland City (winner of the Oceania Champions League) and Flamengo (winner of the Copa Libertadores).
The names of the two semi-finalists, Flamengo and Real Madrid, are clear. For the fans, the most interesting phase of the tournament will begin on 8 February, when the White Ballet will play its match.
