When he reached the Wimbledon final in 2021, he rewrote the sporting history of his country. After protracted problems, Matteo Berrettini is now back. What earned him a wild card for the prestigious Monte Carlo tournament and who has received the same honour?

Berrettini in the Wimbledon final

This was one of the most interesting stories of the year. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini advanced unexpectedly smoothly to the Wimbledon final in 2021.

He lost only three sets in six matches at the All England Club that year and became the Italian finalist at the Major for the first time in more than forty years. Never mind the fact that he was no match for the upstart Djokovic in the final.

But the following years were a torment for him. The Rome native has been through a series of injuries and has yet to build on his Wimbledon success.

The Italian’s comeback

This year has not started promisingly for the 27-year-old either. The first tennis event his health allowed him to play was in March.

Berrettini chose the challenger in Phoenix for his restart. While the world’s top players competed in Indian Wells, the Italian came away with an encouraging result at the lower-tier tournament. He made it all the way to the final.

And now he’s adding valuable results in Marrakech. At the clay tournament in Morocco, he was a pleasant surprise, beating the tournament’s top six, Shevchenko, and Spain’s Munar. And his results have not gone unnoticed.

The wild card in Monte Carlo

The well-attended Masters tournament in Monte Carlo included Berrettini in the list of wild cards awarded. The Italian tennis player will thus play in the best competition.

Djokovic will try to improve his unconvincing performance at the opening clay Masters of the season. A lot is expected from the upcoming generation of Alcaraz and Sinner.

Other interesting names can be found among the wild cards. Berrettini is complemented by the Frenchman Monfils or the Swiss Wawrinka.

Moreover, the Italian loves the game on grass. The entire clay court season can be seen as a good preparation for the upcoming stage of the season. What will he do there?
