The match of the 3rd round of the French league between Nice and Marseille was not played. Fans invaded the pitch and started fighting with each other and the players. A huge scuffle led to the premature end of the match.
It all started around the 75th minute when one of the fans threw a water bottle on the pitch. The thrown bottle hit the star of the visiting team, Dimitri Payet, who took the bottle and threw it back to the stands. This led to dozens of fans charging towards the pitch.
A big scuffle broke out, involving players, fans, referees and members of the management team. After a few minutes, the chairman of the home team calmed everyone down.
The players went to the booths and the fans returned to the stands, some were escorted out of the stadium. After some time, the Nice players returned to the pitch with the referees to resume the match.
The visiting team did not return to the pitch. The head referee thus brought an early end to a match in which Nice were leading 1-0 when Dolberg scored in the 49th minute.
Three visiting players were injured in the melee. Dimitri Payet, who started the fight, was covered in blood and had bruises on his back.
His teammates, Matteo Guendouzi and Luan Peres, were also badly strangled. However, it should not be something that would sideline a player for a long period of time.
The whole incident will be discussed by the French Ligue 1 management with representatives of both clubs. An alternative date for the match has not yet been given.
