The upcoming series of extremely difficult matches without key stoppers may break Solskjaer’s neck
Manchester United will have to do without Harry Maguire for at least the next game against Leicester. However, Raphael Varane is likely to be out for some time after yesterday’s Nations League final between France and Spain.
Manchester United will have to do without Harry Maguire for at least the next game against Leicester. However, Raphael Varane is likely to be out for some time after yesterday’s Nations League final between France and Spain.
The French stopper started the final match in the starting line-up, but was replaced in the 43rd minute by Dayot Upamecano, who was already able to keep the Spanish strikers at bay by the end of the first half with his teammates.
In the second half, however, the Spaniards did manage to make a breakthrough, namely Mikel Oyarzabal, who significantly increased his team’s chances of winning the trophy.
However, it was Karim Benzema who equalised with a beautiful shot and in the 80th minute Kylian Mbappé decided the victory for France, who after a botched European championship, had recovered from their disappointment.
However, the match put a big wrinkle on the forehead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has to prepare his team for some very tough games in which success or failure will be decided.
Leicester, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City will be the Red Devils’ next league opponents to test the Old Trafford team’s ambitions to finish well.
Manchester United, however, is not at all in a good starting position in the Champions League, where it has only three points on its account after two matches so far, and now will come matches with the toughest opponent Solskjaer’s boys have faced so far.
Moreover, the Norwegian coach is under a lot of pressure, having won only one of the last four games and is generally criticized for his performances.
Thus, if Varane is absent for a longer period of time, a possible run of further poor results could prove fatal for Solskjaer!
The pair of stoppers Victor Lindelöf – Eric Bailly are expected to play against Leicester on Saturday at least, with the Swedish stopper having already started 2 league games. The 27-year-old stopper from Ivory Coast has only made one start so far, playing 90 minutes in the EFL Cup.
