Great football was offered by the match at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Real Madrid. There were four goals, three of them scored by the White Ballet’s canon Karim Benzema, who deservedly became the biggest star of this duel.
The match was very lively from the first minute. The first big chance came in the 10th minute when Vinícius scored. But his good attempt only ended up on the crossbar.
Chelsea tried to attack aggressively, but Real’s flawless interplay did not allow Thomas Tuchel’s men to create any chances.
The first goal came in the 21st minute and the Real Madrid fans could rejoice. It was scored by Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema. The latter found a fluffy centre which he finished with a header behind Mendy – 0:1.
And before three minutes had passed, the White Ballet were happy again. Valverde called for a Luka Modric centre, which found the head of Benzema, who again headed the ball accurately to the back post of the Chelsea goal – 0::2.
Real’s attacks were really lethal, Carvajal’s attempt was smothered by Mendy and Christensen just kicked the ball away as it rolled into the Blues goal.
Chelsea managed to reduce it before the half time break. A fluffy centre from Jorginho was taken advantage of by Kai Havertz, who headed Chelsea’s hopes of a good result – 1: 2.
After the first half, Real Madrid led 2: 1 and it was clear that Thomas Tuchel would want to do something more with this result. But just a minute into the second half, Edouard Mendy buried those hopes when his weak pass gave Benzema his third goal and he was able to celebrate his hat-trick – 1: 3.
In a huge chance to reduce the score, Azpilicueta was saved by former Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with an amazing save. Newcomer Romelu Lukaku also had a great chance, but he confirmed his poor form and missed the goal.
There was no further change of fortune. Real Madrid won the first leg at Chelsea 3-1 and advanced to the Champions League semi-finals.
