Thesecond semi-final match pitted the Germans against the second team in Group C, Denmark. The home team had the national task of winning their fourth ever European championship title, a task the intriguing Nordic team intended to make considerably more difficult for them.
Both coaches had to cut one player from the starting line-up due to two yellow cards. In the German one, the stopper Taha Schlotterbeck was replaced by Taha Schlotterbeck, while Hjulmand was replaced by Thomas Delaney in the middle of the Danish midfield.
Already in the fourth minute the Dortmund arena exploded with enthusiasm. After a corner kick, Schlotterbeck, who was playing as a Dorussia player at home, headed home from close range. But the video referee fried the German joy because of a foul.
The match was interrupted by the weather
Just three minutes later, Joshua Kimmich sent in a superb shot, but Schmeichel was ready and made a superb save. In the same minute, Schlotterbeck was in the air again, but his attempt didn’t have the necessary punch.
Kai Havertz confirmed his good start to the game, but the Arsenal forward only headed into the middle of Schmeichel’s goal with a great chance. The first chance for the Danes came in the 24th minute when Joakim Maehle found himself in front of Neuer, but finished just wide of the left post.
After that, Michael Oliver had to stop the match for 20 minutes due to a heavy thunderstorm and hail. The unusual situation didn’t take the Germans off the pace, they came back with another chance from Havertz. But his second attempt was again denied by the excellent Danish goalkeeper.
However, the Danes could have gone into the dressing room in the lead. Hojlund finished off a superbly played break, but Neuer was very quickly out of goal and the Manchester United goalkeeper didn’t have time to flick it on. The first half didn’t offer a goal, but the crowd saw some great football.
The unlucky Andersen and the three-goal Musiala
The second half started with Danish joy. After an interesting penalty kick, Andersen got on the end of it after a series of bounces and shot past Neuer with his left foot. But it was all cut short by an offside. Two minutes later, a penalty was again awarded on the other side.
The unfortunate Andersen touched the ball with his hand in the whitewash and Havertz was able to take the penalty kick. Schmeichel got the direction, but the shot was strong enough – 1: 0. The 25-year-old Havertz could have increased the gap to two goals a moment later after a beautiful action, but he did not score accurately.
Hojlund could have tied the score again, but he did not face Neuer again. And that’s when the other side struck. Schmeichel didn’t run onto a long ball and Musiala had an easy job to score his third goal of the championship. In the end, VAR still disallowed the goal to substitute Wirtz.
The Germans thus did their duty and will face the winner of the match between Spain and Georgia in Stuttgart on Friday.
