The year 2022 moves into the second half. That’s why the UFC has picked the five biggest fights of the year so far. Walk and Teixeira have the clear top spot. But let’s take a look at the other winners in order.
5. place: Calvin Kattar vs. Giga Chikaze
The first UFC tournament of the year and it immediately offered a spectacular battle. The featherweight bout was the main event of the UFC Fight Night tournament in Las Vegas, USA, and this time the matchmakers really hit their stride.
In fact, the five-round battle guaranteed the audience a great show. Georgian Giga Chikadze, known for his hard kicks, was playing for a possible featherweight title opportunity. But his American opponent put an end to his dream and after a dominating performance, he won clearly on points.
4. place: Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno 3
Trilogy complete, will there be a fourth fight? As is the way between these two fighters, it’s a great show. The men’s bantamweight division has belonged to the American continent since 2020.
Mexican Brandon Moreno, who took the belt from Brazilian champion Figueredo in a rematch after a draw in the first fight, defended his title against a familiar opponent in the second UFC gala in January.
The five-round war gave the UFC 270 tournament a good dose of violence. Brazilian Deiveson Figueredo won back his flyweight division belt by unanimous decision and said after the fight that he was ready for a fourth decisive fight. So we’ll likely see the final denouement to this story.
3. location: Bryan Barberena vs. Matt Brown
March’s UFC Fight Night produced a third-place finish in the rankings. Two highly experienced fighters from the United States, Barberena and Brown, provided a beautiful welterweight bout.
The three-round bloody war had to be decided by the judges’ scorecards. In the end, they ruled that the younger of the two participants, Bryan Barberena, won on a split decision. If the fans didn’t get their fill during the first two rounds, the final 30 minutes in particular showed why the UFC ultimately chose this fight for this ranking.
2. place: Khamzat Chimaev vs. Gilbert Burns
Rising UFC star Khamzat Chimaev flew into the UFC like a hurricane. He went through his first four fights in the UFC like a knife through butter, so Dana White has prepared a fighter with a very tough root for him.
Brazilian Gilbert Burns had 17 fights in the UFC prior to this fight and even fought Kamaru Usman for the welterweight championship belt, but unfortunately for him he didn’t make it.
Then in the fight with Khamzat, both fighters showed incredible resilience and put on a crazy three round battle for the crowd. In the end, after a unanimous decision by the judges, Khamzat enjoyed the win and remains undefeated in MMA.
1. place: Jiri Prochazka vs. Glover Teixeira
The top spot in the rankings rightfully belongs to Czech samurai Jiri Procházka, who managed to choke out Brazilian veteran Glover Teixeira with just 28 seconds left in the fifth round.
The aforementioned fight earned him a standing ovation across the MMA community and Jirka made his presence felt. Even better news than his victory in this ranking is the recent announcement that we will likely see a rematch of this memorable fight at the turn of the year. Hopefully with the same result.
