A big surprise and a big inconvenience. Charles Oliveira was supposed to defend his championship title against Justin Gaethje last night, but in the end it won’t happen, the Brazilian didn’t meet the weight limit and only the American will fight for the belt. What went wrong?

UFC 274 is coming up and already tonight combat sports fans can look forward to some great fights. However, something happened during the weigh-ins that could significantly affect the main event of the night. The champion Charles Oliveira failed to make the weight limit.

The situation may already be familiar to fans of the Octagon, who had to deal with a similar situation with, for example, Carlos Vemola or his opponent Tereza Bleda.

Oliveira still holds the championship belt, but he will lose it the moment he enters the cage. Only his opponent Justin Gaethje will fight for the title. If Oliveira loses, the title will remain vacant and the Brazilian will be able to try and win it in his next fight.

There is a lot of talk about how it’s actually possible that the champion didn’t make the weight limit. Oliveira overweighed by about 226 grams, yet when given an extra hour to lose, he boasted on Twitter that he made the weight. But then he made it to the official scale and everything was different.

Multiple tournament participants struggled with the weight. Matt Schnell, for example, did make the weight, but revealed that the official scale worked with a 0.8 pound difference.

Fighter Ariane Carnelossi, for her part, congratulated the “genius who tinkered with the scale, causing it to show half a pound differently than the official one.” Fortunately, she was under the limit, so she was unaffected.

Foreign media reports claim that the scale available to the fighters and fighters was reset overnight. Some of the UFC 274 participants had a difference of maybe 2 pounds on the scales in the morning and evening.
