The WTA 1000 tennis tournament in Miami starts on Tuesday 22 March. As usual, it will be very well attended – only Ashleigh Barty and Barbora Krejcikova will be missing from the top ten. Which players can think about winning the valuable trophy?
In 2021, world number one Ashleigh Barty won the tournament in Miami. The Australian tennis player lost only three sets on her way to the final. She then faced Bianca Andreescu in the title match, but she retired in the second set at 0:4.
However, it is already certain that she will not defend the trophy. The 25-year-old tennis player will not be playing on the local courts as she did in Indian Wells, which could significantly reduce her lead at the top of the WTA rankings.
Aryna Sabalenka will be the number one seed. However, the Belarusian player hasn’t shown convincing performances in recent weeks. Her triumph would be very surprising. On the other side of the line-up, we find Iga Swiatek.
The 20-year-old tennis player from Poland is undoubtedly one of the aspirants for the overall victory. She is currently on a streak of eleven consecutive wins. In Miami, she would like to improve on her result from last year, where she was eliminated in the last 16.
However, we must not forget Anett Kontaveit, Paula Badosa, Garbine Muguruza and Ons Jabeur. Maria Sakkari of Greece, who reached the semi-finals a year ago, could be in good form.
However, the Czech Republic will also be well represented. Karolína Plíšková, Petra Kvitová and Markéta Vondroušová will be seeded – so they will play in the second round. But Tereza Martincova and Katerina Siniakova will also be missing. Thanks to the wild card, fans can also look forward to Linda Fruhvirt’s matches.
