A great rivalry
These two tennis players are literally destined to form a pair whose rivalry will be in the spotlight for a good long time. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are almost contemporaries and both have had similarly bright starts on the ATP circuit.
Spaniard Alcaraz has two Grand Slams under his belt and is only one short of the Paris one to conquer the Major title on all three surfaces. An incredible feat at the age of twenty-one.
Italy’s Sinner has been a comet in recent months. He celebrated his first Grand Slam title this year at the Australian Open, so in a sense he has equalled Alcaraz’s pace.
After the end of the Federer, Nadal, Djokovic trio era, tennis could not wish for anything better than a similar phenomenon to the aforementioned pair of semi-finalists.
Semi-final Sinner – Alcaraz
A year ago, the favourite for this match would have been clear. At that time, the Spaniard was rolling on clay, almost following the example of his compatriot Nadal. But he didn’t win the title from Paris, after health problems a year ago he was no match for Novak Djokovic.
However, after a period of minor decline and hand problems, he is on the rise again at Roland Garros. He hasn’t experienced any problems advancing here this year. He even defeated the upstart Tsitsipas without losing a set. And even the Greek’s complaints about the Spaniard’s unfairness didn’t change that .
This year, Sinner should be at least an equal opponent for Alcaraz. The Australian champion’s record would make him a slight favorite. Sinner has only lost twice this year out of thirty fights. But clay is more suited to his opponent.
The South Tyrolean native has also been through health problems and his participation in the French Open was not certain. But he too has lost only one set at Roland Garros so far.
Matches between the pair are rarely even, with both tennis players coming away as winners four times. Of the last four duels, both Sinner and Alcaraz have won twice.
Their most prestigious matches to date have been at Masters tournaments. All in the semifinals, coincidentally. Alcaraz has two wins at Indian Wells. The Italian won last year in Miami.
It’s been a long time since the pair have faced each other on clay. Two years ago, Sinner won on a brick surface in Umag, Croatia.
He will play the highly anticipated semi-final match knowing that he will become the world number one after the Grand Slam. We will see if he is number one when he battles Alcaraz on Friday afternoon.
Conclusion
The second semi-final will also be an interesting showdown. Germany’s Zverev will face last year’s finalist Ruud. However, given the way the careers of Alcaraz and Sinner are going, it is their match that is the centerpiece of the current tennis world.
