Everyone has a bad day a few times in their life. However, ex-Slav Simon Deli’s national teammate during the Africa Cup of Nations had a literally horrible 24 hours. What happened to him?

On Sunday, the African Cup of Nations pitted the favoured Ivory Coast against Sierra Leone. The match favourite was heading for a 2-1 win, only for goalkeeper Badr Ali Sangare to crash out in the 93rd minute.

The ball flew into the net and Sangaré wanted to catch it, but he literally got wet on the dry grass and the ball fell out of his gloves.

Alhaji Kamara punished the huge mistake and Ivory Coast lost 3 points in injury time. However, despite this loss, Simon Deli and co. have progress in their own hands.

The statistics site WhoScored rated Sangari as the worst man of the match (rating 5.5). But if all he had done on this day was to concede a goal, he would have been even more satisfied.

Sangaré’s clumsy fall probably caused a serious knee injury. And the worst news came on Monday morning (the Sierra Leone game was played on Sunday afternoon).

The Ivory Coast goalkeeper’s father died. These 24 hours must have been truly horrific, and we have no choice but to wish the 35-year-old goalkeeper much strength and our condolences, because this is a real tragedy.

Can he pull his team together? There could be at least a small band-aid for Sangare if he and his teammates can dominate the Africa Cup of Nations.
