Latvia hasn’t spoiled Sweden’s unequivocal ride at this year’s World Championship. The favourite of the match triumphed 7: 2 and put all three points on the scoreboard in the fifth game. Nobody else managed to do that.
“It was great that we were able to bounce back so quickly and pull the match to our side. I’ve managed to score twice in one inning this season. But we didn’t start the second period well,” said Fabian Zetterlund, a two-time goal scorer, in front of the Czech TV cameras.
At the beginning of the second period, Tre Kronor lost the lead 2:0 in just 23 seconds. But the Swedes responded to the quick Latvian equalizer in style. They scored three goals in 26 seconds, a new World Championship record.
The fastest three goals in thirty-eight years
Fabian Zetterlund scored the first two of these goals in 17 seconds, while Joel Eriksson Ek added the third in 9 seconds. Tre Kronor thus broke Canada’s long-standing record set in 1986. In addition, they broke the resistance of the previously excellent Latvians.
But before the Swedes could start their goal machine, they had to face a major setback. Rasmus Dahlin was sent off for assault with a five-minute penalty and suspended for the rest of the game. The Buffalo defenseman fouled Egle awkwardly and had to come off the ice after consulting the referees.
“When Rasmus was ejected from the game, it was a big blow for us. But in the end, we recovered and threw a lot of energy into the offense. It was a good game. We still have two games left and then we’ll see,” Jonas Brolin, scorer of the second goal, commented to the IIHF website.
The Swedes’ last opponents in Group B in Ostrava are France and Slovakia. The Latvians will also face Slovakia and finally the United States of America.
