On Thursday, Ostrava’s Group B pitted Kazakhstan and one of the championship’s biggest favorites, Sweden, against each other. The northerners, who rely on a large number of NHL players, clearly confirmed their role.
Marcus Johansson changed the score for the first time at 10.20. The Minnesota forward took advantage of the cooperation between Burakovsky and Brodin to beat Boyarkin. Tre Kronur had a clear advantage in the opening period and outshot their Asian opponent 15:1.
In the second part of the game the difference in shots was even 20:4. Linus Johansson took advantage of a great attacking play and Sorensen, who had been sent off a minute earlier, was able to rejoice.
Beketayev had the hardest shot
The third goal came right at the beginning of the second period. Eric Karlsson took the puck into the offensive zone and after a series of passes, Fabian Zetterlund literally put the puck behind Boyarkin. It was the first ever point for the San Jose goal scorer in the entire championship.
But the Kazakhs still had a little plot. A beautiful shot by defenseman Adil Beketayev reduced the deficit. According to the Czech TV commentary, it was the hardest shot of the whole championship.
The Central Asian team still had some hints of dangerous actions, but the Swedes kept the rest of the game under control. Defensively, they helped their goalkeeper Ersson and did not let him capitulate again.
Next up, the Swedes play Latvia on Saturday and the Kazakhs have a Friday game against the Germans in which they will be looking for another important point to stay in the elite division.
