The stupidest excuse? Covington criticizes the referee after a lackluster performance and loss in a UFC title fight: They hate me because I support Trump
Unexpected? No. Rather typical. As expected, Colby Covington lost his title fight at the UFC 296 gala and didn’t take the result entirely well. He was fairly quick to find an excuse as to why the judges decided to give Leon Edwards the win.
Unexpected? No. Rather typical. As expected, Colby Covington lost his title fight at the UFC 296 gala and didn’t take the result entirely well. He rather quickly found an excuse as to why the judges opted for Leon Edwards to win.
The UFC has its last gala of the year behind it. We saw some tough finishes during it, but also two title fights that didn’t impress too much. In particular, the main fight of the night, which was taken care of by Leon Edwards and Colby Covington, was not attractive at all.
At the same time, it looked promising. Covington had his traditional mouthful of talk, wasn’t afraid to get personal and even committed some distasteful language far beyond what is acceptable. But when it came to the fight, the American was silent.
With the exception of the fifth word, the big Donald Trump supporter was on the defensive the entire time, only backing down to the more technical Edwards. He had enormous respect for the English champion’s counters, looking utterly clueless, daring nothing.
Edwards was the one who held the centre of the cage in the match, and gradually and calmly scored the duel in his favour. It was not an attractive fight. On the contrary. Perhaps one of the most boring title fights of all time.
But the Englishman wasn’t the one who had to rush anywhere. It takes two in the cage to make a fight attractive. And Covington remained far below expectations.
Not that Colby was expected to be Edwards’ equal opponent. He hasn’t wrestled in a long time. As the pundits mention, he got the title fight more out of favoritism than because he deserved it. But Covington wasn’t himself at all. That was after the fight, when he was looking for something to blame for the loss.
Covington came up with a stupid excuse
When the fifth round ended, the only round Colby Covington could have won after four five-minute rounds that he lost, he threw his hands up in incomprehension. He thought he was the winner. Then he feigned disappointment. If he didn’t realize in his heart that he had lost, it was hard to say. But there was no doubt that he had lost.
Once Covington lost, his favorite and favorite Donald Trump left the arena. That Colby’s words in his post-game cage statement were directed at him, too? The former president could barely hear them. It’s an interesting relationship.
And it’s Trump who the American fighter believes is to blame for his loss. “I think I won the third, fourth and fifth rounds. Especially the fifth round was clearly on my side. Edwards didn’t do any damage to me, so I thought I won,” MMA Junkie quoted Covington as saying.
“The judges never favor me. They hate me because I support Donald Trump. Everybody here hates Trump. That’s just the way it is. But life goes on,” said the man who lost his third title fight.
