We had another stellar night in the millionaire Champions League and it was definitely something to watch. Real Madrid pulled off an unprecedented turnaround to send a star-studded Paris Saint-Germain back to the French capital. In this article, we take a look at how the team fared when the Parisian outfit’s star trio started in the starting lineup.

PSG announced the arrival of Messi and fans around the world were looking forward to seeing the star attacking trio of Mbappé-Neymar-Messi

When Paris Saint-Germain announced in the summer that they had signed seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi on a free transfer, fans of more than just the Parisian club cheered with joy.

The idea of the Argentine reuniting with his friend Neymar and being complemented by rising star of world football Kylian Mbappé sent shivers down the spine of many a football fan.

Unfortunately, spectators at Princes Park had to wait for the whole trio to appear on the pitch at one point. All three cannonballers have been plagued by numerous injuries this season, and together they have only made 11 appearances in the starting eleven all season. Expectations were thus logically even higher when the mentioned moment was constantly postponed.

Of the galactic trio, only the young Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, who practically dragged the French big club’s offensive on his shoulders, has been able to carry the scale this season. Neymar spent most of his time with the club doctors and Lionel Messi seemed to be mourning the sunny Catalonia and rather looking for a new place to play for the time being.

How did the team fare when the trio started in the starting eleven?

In the aforementioned eleven games when the three players have started together in the starting line-up, things have not been as rosy as expected. Since Neymar and Messi are not the types of footballers who, at their age and on their payroll, would challenge the opposition’s defence, the team rather languished with them in the line-up.

In these eleven games, the team has won only five times, which is definitely disappointing for the goals that president Nasser Al-Khelaifi set before the season. Moreover, in the remaining cases, the team drew twice and even left four times with empty points.

In the French Ligue One, the Parisian team does not have to regret the losses, as they lead the competition by thirteen points. This is a difficult lead to achieve given that this is the only competition the club is currently fighting for.

However, on the last day of January, PSG crashed out in the French Cup semi-final against Nice on penalties and on the aforementioned Wednesday night they fell short to Spain’s White Ballet, thus bidding farewell to the coveted Champions League in the eighth round.

To make matters worse, at the beginning of the season, the Parisian giant fell to Lille OSC in the French Super Cup. As a result, the chair of Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino is swinging significantly and there has been speculation in the media for some time that he will be replaced by French legend Zinedine Zidane. It will also be interesting to see the situation of Kylian Mbappé, who has been linked with leaving the club for Real Madrid.
