The Slovenes were one standard situation away from their first win at the Euro. But they did set a record for attendance

A final corner kick and a header by AC Milan forward Jovic denied Slovenia their first ever win at the Euro. The last standard situation was watched by a large Slovenian crowd, which set a record for attendance in Munich.

They could have been heroes and celebrated with the whole nation the first ever European Championship win. But in the fifth minute of the set-up, Luka Jovic took their joy away. Slovenia only drew 1-1 with the Serbs. The leading goal was scored by Žan Karničnik in the 69th minute.

The country of two million won at least one more victory. According to Slovenian journalist Grega Sever, quoted by UEFA.com, 20,170 Slovenians turned up for the game against the Serbs, a new all-time Slovenian attendance record.

“We have shown that we deserve to be at the Euros. Football can be cruel, but I’m sure this team will redeem itself. We played a great game in an excellent atmosphere. The fans were really excellent today,” said Matjaž Kek, Slovenia’s coach.

The road to the playoffs goes through England

The Slovenians are in third place after two games in Group C with two points. Second-placed Denmark is in the same position. Leading England have four points and the last Serbs have just one. In the last match, however, the country in the shadow of the Julian Alps will face a very strong England.

“We are now facing the last game of the group. We have to put the unfortunate end of the Serbia game behind us and concentrate on England. They are the clear favourites, but so were the Danes and the Serbs,” added coach Kek.

“It’s a shame because we were so close to victory. But that’s football. We played at a very high level, but unfortunately we didn’t protect the final standard situation. We have to be better concentrated against England,” said goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

With just two points, the Slovenians will definitely not reach the eight-finals. For their fantastic fans they have to play one of the biggest favourites for the overall triumph on Tuesday night.
