The shame of Newcastle: Losing to a six-league team underlined a long-term crisis

Newcastle can currently only remember the years when he was playing regularly in European cups. It’s not doing well financially and it’s struggling to save year after year. And with Sunday’s fixture, it looks like that’s not going to change.

The atmosphere in the Newcastle fan camp has been poor in recent years. The Magpies may have salvaged the Premier League this season, but the game has been dreadful and to the annoyance of all supporters, unpopular coach Steve Bruce has lasted until the end of the season.

The new season is expected to be a struggle for salvation again, helped a lot by the fact that Newcastle’s management has not brought in any sound reinforcements so far. On the other hand, Andy Carroll and Florian Lejeune are on their way out.

And on Sunday, it was clear to see that the current squad will not be enough. Newcastle lost their friendly against York City in a shameful 0-1 defeat.

Why disgraceful? York City play in the sixth highest league in England.

And if you think the Magpies were playing with half a squad, it’s not true. Of the players who don’t play regularly in the A-team, two were in the starting line-up. There was Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser.

Aside from the disgraceful result, Newcastle fans were also unnerved by the fact that striker Joelinton was injured during the first half. Their frowns were even more wrinkled when they found out that the under-21 team had also lost.
