The Olympic golf course Kasumigaseki Country Club in Tokyo hosted the second round of the men’s tournament. Sixty chosen players took to the fairways in various states of mind as Thursday’s first round had already dealt its cards. In fact, you could say that nothing on the leaderboard remained the same after the second round.

Golf is a very erratic sport. It only takes one bad shot to turn a relaxing afternoon into a walk in hell. Plus, the course in Tokyo is not kind to golfers. For the second day in a row, play had to be suspended for several hours due to the danger of lightning. Twice.

On the very next day, the Czech participant Ondrej Lieser suffered the same fate. He had to go to the clubhouse unscheduled just like on Thursday after playing the tenth hole. Until then his game had a very similar course.

He played the first eight holes more or less without any wild hesitation, but he made his first bogey on the ninth. However, it was a much worse scenario when he returned to the course.

He played five more bogeys on the remaining eight holes, which dropped him to the last position with a score of +7. The penultimate Puerto Rican, Campos, is three shots better off.

At one point, the leaderboard was topped by Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who despite a drop in form in recent months is still one of the hottest medal favourites. He played the second round in a sympathetic 66, but managed to make one bogey on the 18th, which eventually dropped him to a tied seventh position with a total score of -7.

Last Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama is also doing well. He played the second round steadily without any hesitation, and he also made six birdies in the meantime. After seventeen holes, he was slowed down by another storm with a score of -8.

However, the player of the day was clearly the American Xander Schauffele. Despite two bogeys, he managed to play the second round in 63 shots. In total, he leads the Olympic golf tournament with a score of -11. Just one shot behind him is Carlos Ortiz of Mexico.

The advantage of the Olympic golf tournament is that the second round is not followed by a cut, which usually sends about half of the players out of the tournament. All sixty players will play the weekend rounds, including the Czech Ondrej Lieser, who still has a chance for at least a slight redress.

However, Friday’s third round will be even longer, as a second storm prevented some players from playing all eighteen holes. Therefore, the second round will be played in the morning before the start of the third round.
