While most of the players are on vacation, tournaments are still being played. Three Czechs are also playing on the WTA 125 women’s circuit in Angers, France. Two of them, Markéta Vondroušová and Karolina Muchová, are still fighting for valuable points in the rankings.
The tournament is held indoors and its director is still an active player and local native Nicolas Mahut, who is mainly known for doubles but was also part of the longest match in Wimbledon history.
The No. 1 player in the world, Shuai Zhang of China, is the No. 24 player in the world. The 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin (238th) has also entered the tournament, but this season has seen her in very poor form.
The first of the Czechs to take the court was Markéta Vondroušová (97th), who is slowly recovering from injury. The winner of the ITF tournament in Shrewsbury, England, managed to cope with the former world number 12, Belgian Yanina Wickamyer (322nd).
The match was almost decided and at 6-1 in the first set and 5-1 in the second set it seemed that Vondrousova would cruise to an easy victory.
But the experienced Belgian managed to take the match to a tiebreak with her patience. However, the native of Sokolov was again more successful and won the second set 7-6 (5).
In the next round she will face the winner of the match between Viktoria Tomova of Bulgaria and Joanna Garland of Taiwan. The match is scheduled for today.
And the other Czech representative in the tournament, Karolina Muchova (154th), will also play today. She will face the home player Clara Burel (125th).
Both players are not having a very successful season. Muchová missed part of it due to injury and would like to get back to optimal form. The match is scheduled for today at 18:00.
