Claudio Lotito, the mastermind of the whole Salerno affair. The president and owner of Lazio Rome was also the official owner of Salernitana until June last year. But after the promotion, the I Granata footballers had to deal with a serious problem – a conflict of ownership, which the Serie A rules now prohibit in one competition.
The Serie A newcomer was given an ultimatum by the Italian Football Federation – to find a new owner by the end of the calendar year. But for months, no serious buyer has been found. The results on the sporting front did not help the deal either.
Thus, the new year 2022 could have brought a truly bizarre situation – Salernitana’s expulsion from the top competition, relegation to the fourth league and the cancellation of all results from the current season. But on the last day of last year, a saviour was found.
Danilo Iervolino, a 43-year-old Italian businessman, bought the club from Campania for 10 million euros. The founder of Pegaso Telematic University (an online university) sold his company for €1 billion in September 2021. A few weeks later, he bought the majority rights in a company operating in the information sector. On 31 December, he brought the acquisition of a football club to a successful conclusion.
US Salernitana 1919 has acquired a movable owner in Iervolino, who wants to invest more than 20 million euros to strengthen the squad in the January transfer deadline. The squad will need to be strengthened on all fronts as it has the worst offensive record (11 goals scored) and the worst defensive record (42 goals conceded).
Salernitana are eight points behind the non-relegation place, which is defended by Spezia. The club averted a bureaucratic exclusion from the competition. Will a similar feat succeed in football stadiums?
