Tennis fans have been largely dissatisfied with the technology that reports cars these days. While there was an obvious bug in the third round, there was a problem in the quarterfinals when the power went out. Should line judges return to the tennis courts?

Line judges are gradually starting to disappear from the tennis courts. They have been replaced by modern technology that automatically reports outs. Although this is a step forward, some players and fans don’t like it.

An unprecedented failure for tennis

The prestigious tournament in Miami, which belongs to the ATP Masters and WTA 1000 categories, reveals significant errors. The biggest one happened during the third round match in which Daria Kasatkina crashed into Sorana Cirstea.

In the first set at 4:2 for the Russian, Cirstea had the advantage and could have reduced it to 4:3. Her serve was clearly out, but the system did not register an out. This also surprised the Romanian, who was about to serve for the second time.

The subsequent hawk’s eye showed that it was a good ball, although it was not. Even the head umpire couldn’t do anything about the situation. Perhaps as a result, the 11th player in the WTA rankings lost the first set 5:7.

Kasatkina subsequently lost the second set as well, this time by 6:2. She had to say goodbye to the prestigious tournament in Miami in the third round. We can only speculate on how the match would have turned out if an out had been called.

Most tournaments still have line judges. However, from next year the new technology should be introduced on all surfaces, so line judges will only be seen at smaller tournaments.

This is definitely a step forward, but there must not be any mistakes like the one in Miami. One of the biggest opponents of this technology is definitely the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, currently the tenth player in the WTA rankings.

The technology is definitely not perfect yet. We saw that in the quarterfinal between Azarenka and Putinsteva. The match had to be suspended for almost an hour because the hawk’s eye stopped working. The players had to leave the court and wait for the problem to be solved.
