The MotoGP Royal Cubature has its fifteenth round of the season, the Aragon Grand Prix, on Sunday 18 September. Marc Márquez, who is returning to racing after four months, will be part of it.
The Italian Grand Prix in May was Márquez’s last race for quite a while. It was after the eighth round of this season’s MotoGP season that the Spanish legend decided to undergo a complicated operation on his right arm, which he injured at Jerez, and therefore at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Notably, this was the fourth operation Márquez has undergone since that accident. The six-time champion has thus gradually worked on his recovery and only a week ago he hopped on a Honda Repsol bike for the first time.
The twenty-nine-year-old Spaniard returned to action for post-race testing at Misano and admitted that he did not enjoy riding the bike, but rather suffered on it. On the other hand, he commented positively on the improvement that his arm surgery had brought.
Márquez’s statement
“After discussions with the doctors and the team, we have decided that the best thing for my recovery is to continue riding and racking up the kilometres for next year,” said Márquez, whose words were quoted by Motorsport.
“To do it in Aragon (return – ed.) in front of all the fans is priceless. I’m sure your support will help me get through the whole weekend. I’m looking forward to Friday and being on the bike,” he added.
“In the left-hand corners I felt I was in a more natural position than before. In the right-hand corners I lacked power. In the right-hand corners I had to push a lot. On the fast section I was losing a few tenths because I didn’t have full stability yet, but I felt safe on the bike all the time, which is also important,” he explained.
It’s been a frustrating season for Honda
Márquez is 15th in the riders’ championship with 60 points after a long absence, returning to racing after almost four months. He is, it should be added, still ahead of his teammate, Pole Espargaro, in this ranking.
This, by the way, also documents how bad a season the Honda Repsol team is having. They are even in last place in the team championship. What’s more, the Japanese team has notched up one very negative performance.
This year, Honda has run a race in which it has not even scored any points at all. And that hasn’t happened in 40 years, most recently in the 1982 French Grand Prix.
