Adam Hložek has been with Bayer Leverkusen for half a year now and during this time he has managed to break into the starting line-up. The 20-year-old forward spoke about his acclimatisation and his heart attacking relegation match against Atlético Madrid.

Adam Hložek has long been regarded as the biggest Czech football star to move from the Czech league for a bundle abroad. Although the player’s form was declining, Bayer Leverkusen made an offer for him that was advantageous for Sparta.

The young offensive footballer has been kicking around in Germany since the summer, where he has already managed to acclimatise. Although he did not do well at first, he managed to break it and currently belongs to the starting line-up.

His position at Sparta is different from that of the other team. While in the red jersey he played more on the wing, in Bayer he is in attack. However, he doesn’t play a pure spike as many might think.

“Coach Alonso puts me in a kind of false nine according to the opposition’s formation and I think that suits me best. When I play the false nine, it’s maybe more of an eight, where I’m a little bit withdrawn behind the two spike strikers.

On Sunday in Mönchengladbach, after twenty minutes I crawled to the three midfielders and complemented both strikers from behind. It was a bit challenging, but I think I’m comfortable in that position on the pitch,” Hložek told Goal.

He was particularly successful towards the end of the autumn, his assist helping Bayer to a draw at Atlético Madrid, which was ultimately golden, although it was a narrow miss and resulted in defeat and relegation from the European Cup.

“The rematch in Madrid was an unbelievable experience and a madhouse when the French referee additionally whistled a penalty against us after the end of the game after a long set-up. If Carasco had converted it, we would not have qualified for the spring play-offs in the European Cup as the last team in the group.

Fortunately, thanks to Lukas Hradecky, we secured the necessary draw. Now Monaco awaits us in the Europa League and I have something to give back from the game against Sparta,” he added.

Shortly afterwards, he managed to score for the first time in the Bundesliga, and was then given plenty of space on the pitch in preparation. In the first competitive match of 2023, he was able to make his mark in the statistics.

The first goal was scored by Mitchel Bakker after his stick from a cross, and he assisted on Amine Adli’s own goal. Will he be able to help Leverkusen to another win on Wednesday against Bochum?
