João Cancelo shocked the football world when he chose to leave for Bayern Munich just before the end of the winter transfer window. What’s to blame for his demise at Manchester City and why is Pep Guardiola letting him go with a light heart?
Cancelo arrived at Manchester City in the summer of 2019 in exchange for Danilo. He adapted to the Premier League relatively quickly and Pep Guardiola has made him one of the best full-backs in the world.
Thanks to Cancelo’s footballing mindset, the Spanish strategist uses him as a full-back who moves into the middle of the park when making crosses, where he outnumbers opponents and helps create play.
Cancelo has been an almost indispensable player for the Citizens in the past two seasons, recording a 3+10 record last season, racking up 2 goals and 5 assists during the fall.
But after the World Cup, the relationship between the two sides began to crumble. Cancelo started in the starting lineup after the World Cup in only three games out of ten, including one substitution right at halftime. In addition, the last three games he sat only on the substitutes’ bench.
And just before the last FA Cup match against Arsenal, according to the Daily Mail, there was supposed to be a big argument between Cancelo and Guardiola. At the pre-match training session, where the Portuguese learned that he would not be in the starting line-up, he was supposed to get angry and a big argument with the Citizens coach was to come.
But Guardiola doesn’t want to suffer any hints of indiscipline, no player should be more important to him than the club. That’s why he agreed to his immediate departure with a light heart. Cancelo also suspects that his relationship with Guardiola is definitely damaged and there is no going back.
So the Portuguese will head to Bayern Munich on a six-month loan with a €70 million option. This will strengthen the right side of the defence, where Nagelsmann relied on Pavard, Mazraoui or Stanisic.
