The final round of the World Rally Championship will take place in Monza, Italy, on 19-21 November. Will it be Sébastien Ogier or Elfyn Evans who takes the title? That will be decided in the last round of the season!
After the Catalan Rally, nothing is still clear. Seven-time champion Ogier finished fourth in his Toyota in Catalunya, postponing his next triumph. The eleventh race of the season was dominated by Thierry Neuville in his Hyundai i20.
However, it is Ogier who leads the championship standings with 204 points ahead of Evans, who has 187 points. The legendary Frenchman was hoping to finish the title fight on his favourite tarmac in Catalonia.
However, he said the necessary changes had not been made to his car and the stages were not ideal in many respects.
“It’s still points for the championship. When we came here we were aiming higher, but for some reason we didn’t manage to win here. In difficult moments like this, we take what we need for the championship,” Ogier told Motorsport website, responding to a question about his position.
“It was a very close race, we pushed hard, especially in the opening three stages. However, it started to rain during the last stage, which didn’t help my strategy and we decided not to take any risks,” he explained.
“Overall, though, we have to keep in mind that this weekend is another positive step to win the title, and that’s the most important thing. But the championship is not over yet, so we have to be good in Monza and try to repeat our success from last year,” he concluded.
On the other hand, Neuville won the Rally of Catalonia for the second consecutive year. In addition to the Rally of Catalonia, the thirty-three-year-old Belgian also dominated his home race in Belgium this year.
Ogier has won four times in the current season, most recently in Kenya at the end of June.
Evans, as his biggest rival for the championship, triumphed in the Rally of Portugal and in Finland. Ogier currently has the best chance of winning the overall championship. The 37-year-old Frenchman would celebrate his eighth world championship title.
