The prestige of the competition, the ratings and the fight for the title. What does Lewandowski bring to La Liga?
Robert Lewandowski is a new Barcelona player. And it’s good news not only for Catalan fans, but for the whole of La Liga. Why?
Robert Lewandowski is a new Barcelona player. And it’s good news not only for Catalan fans, but for the whole of La Liga. Why?
Let’s put aside the fear for Barcelona’s future for now and look at how the club’s management raises funds for new players. If we take only the sporting aspect, Barcelona is strengthening in an excellent way.
Franck Kessié and Andreas Christensen for free, plus Raphinha and, as the icing on the cake, one of the best strikers in the world, Robert Lewandowski. It is the arrival of the Polish goal scorer that could be a big boost for the whole of La Liga.
Viewership
In recent years, the Spanish league has fallen off a cliff. In 2009-2018, it was practically the best and most prestigious, the El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona was epic, the whole world watched the clashes between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. But after the departure of both of them, the most watched match took a huge blow.
Other big names such as Sergio Ramos and Neymar have left La Liga in recent years and although El Clásico remains the most watched game in the world, the prestige has waned considerably.
And it is Lewandowski who can help this tremendously. Well, you tell me, don’t you want to see a duel between the two best spearhead strikers in the world?
The competition and the title fight
If we leave aside the last match, when Barcelona swept Real Madrid 4-0, who had a 15-point lead in the league and were focusing on the Champions League, the Culés have been pulling out all the stops in recent years.
They had not beaten their old rivals six times in a row before, losing five of them. It’s been three years since Barcelona won the title, so Real have not been a worthy opponent in recent years, and Lewandowski should change that.
Prestige
Although last year’s Champions League was dominated by a Spanish team (Real Madrid) and the other was in the semi-finals (Villarreal), the prestige of Spanish football in European cups has suffered slightly in recent years. While previously Real Madrid and Barcelona were always considered the two main favourites, this has not been the case in recent years.
Manchester City, Liverpool, PSG, Bayern Munich and Chelsea are tipped by fans and experts to win the Champions League. Even Real Madrid has been considered the underdog in virtually all matches throughout the knockout stage. With Lewandowski in Barcelona, the strike force of Spanish football is rising again, which is good for the whole country.
