In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the broadcast rights to the much-watched English Premier League will change hands from the 2022/23 season. LAMA ENERGY GROUP failed to renew its contract, which expires after the following season, and the world’s most prestigious league will now be broadcast exclusively by Skylink. However, it is not yet clear how.
Czech and Slovak fans of English football are likely to lose their favourite channel Premier Sport, which focuses almost exclusively on English football, after next season. The LAMA ENERGY GROUP, which operated the channel and held the broadcasting rights until now, has failed to renew its contract.
It is now unclear what will happen to Premier Sport after the upcoming season. In any case, the competition is likely to lose a lot of viewers, as the channel was offered jointly by three operators – O2, T-Mobile and Telly – on their TV channels (O2 TV, Digi TV and T-Mobile TV).
Canal+, or its Czechoslovak subsidiary Skylink, has not disclosed whether it also plans to launch a dedicated football channel or whether it will, for example, broadcast the Premier League on its own channel. In any case, it owns the rights for the next three years, until the 2024/25 season, and the great news is that it will broadcast all 380 matches each year.
“We are delighted to bring the Premier League, one of the most prestigious sporting competitions, to the clients of Skylink – the leading Czech and Slovak TV entertainment provider. This move is part of our future strategy to bring the best content and services to our customers, especially when it comes to sports, movies and series,” said Jaromír Glisník, member of the board of directors of Skylink and Canal+, in a press release.
“The Premier League is excited about its continued superior relationship with Canal+ in France and the opportunity to extend our cooperation to its two new markets, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, through Skylink,” added Paul Molnar, media director of the English competition.
“Canal+ has consistently offered its customers top-class sports coverage and Premier League fans in these new countries can look forward to watching lots of great games right through to the 2024/25 season.”
