There have been 42 new confirmed cases of coronavirus among players and staff in the Premier League in the last week. Up to 6 clubs are thought to be among those affected.

The highest number of confirmed cases in a week so far was 40, in January this year. The number of infections this week is therefore alarming for the clubs and the league itself.

The clubs currently struggling with the coronavirus include Brighton, Tottenham, Manchester United, Leicester, Norwich and Aston Villa.

Tottenham were unable to play their match with Stade Rennes this week due to the coronavirus, and as both teams have very busy schedules, it is likely that this match will not be played at all. Tottenham also did not play their weekend game against Brighton, who are also struggling with coronavirus.

Manchester United have closed their training centre for 24 hours due to the spreading infection. It is now considering whether to play Tuesday’s game against Brentford.

What are the managers’ views on the situation?

The managers’ attitude is mixed. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is urging his players to be strict with their precautions, even encouraging players to have a booster.

Sean Dyche is the opposite example. The Burnley coach does not encourage his players to have the vaccine, and says it is each player’s free choice, even though he himself is already on his third dose.
