The premier Finnish MotoGP Grand Prix will not be held this year! The race is postponed until next season

Finnish fans will not be able to see MotoGP races in their home country this season either. Series promoter Dorna, together with the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) and the International Grand Prix Teams Association (IRTA), has announced that the Grand Prix will not return to the Land of a Thousand Lakes for a third attempt. The last time Finland hosted a road motorcycle world championship was in 1982 at the Imatra road circuit.

Like Formula 1, which will not hold the originally planned number of races this season, the MotoGP series will see changes to its calendar for this year.

The Finnish Grand Prix, which was due to take place on 10 July, will not make its long-awaited return for the third year running.

The Kymiring circuit was due to welcome the “circus of the world’s fastest men on two wheels” as early as 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic has meant that Finland has had to wait for its return to the World Championship calendar.

Originally, it was only supposed to be a one-year delay. However, the pandemic was still a major threat to Finland, so the grand prix was postponed again last year.

This time the pandemic was not behind the postponement of the grand prix again, but the extensive work on the circuit facilities and the current geopolitical situation in the country, which delayed all activities on the track. According to the words of the FIM, IRTA and Dorna on the MotoGP website, these circumstances have necessitated the cancellation of the Finnish Grand Prix for the 2022 edition as well.

The Land of a Thousand Lakes last hosted a World Championship race in 1982 at the Imatra road circuit, where the legendary Giacomo Agostini won a total of 17 times. The first ever Finnish Grand Prix was held in 1962 on the city track in Tampere.

This year’s MotoGP season will thus consist of twenty races out of the originally planned twenty-one.

Even so, this is still a record number of races in one year. However, the cancellation of the Finnish Grand Prix means that the summer break will be extended from four to six weeks.
