Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying match was excellent, but the same assessment is far from possible. The plane with the German national team had to make an emergency landing in Edinburgh. The team waited several hours for an alternative solution.
A very unpleasant experience. This is probably how one could interpret the journey of the German national team from Iceland.
Hand on heart, there are a quantum of people who are afraid of flying by the very principle. Yes, the world’s footballers have been through something before and they probably don’t admit this much, yet it is not pleasant to hear during the flight that the plane now has to make an emergency landing due to an unspecified fault.
The Germans set off on their return journey immediately after the match and were due to land in Frankfurt before 6am. However, over Scotland, the aircraft suddenly made a sharp turn and began a steep descent. The machine sent out a 7700 distress signal and made an unscheduled landing in Edinburgh.
This code, when sent by an aircraft in this way, usually means that you are in a life-threatening situation. Until now, however, the German Football Association has not specified the reason why the Boeing 737-522 sent the signal.
All of the players stepped off the plane after landing without difficulty and were reportedly in good spirits during the wait. After a few hours, a replacement plane finally arrived and took the German representatives home.
In Wednesday’s qualifying match, Germany blasted the Icelandic national team 4-0. Serge Gnabry scored in the fourth minute and twenty minutes later Antonio Rüdiger added another goal.
In the 56th minute, Leroy Sané scored after a beautiful pass from Leon Goretzka to bring Germany within three goals. And in the 89th minute, the scoreboard changed for the fourth time, this time with Timo Werner scoring.
With 15 points, Germany leads qualifying Group J by four points over Armenia. The score is also a reflection of the Germans’ strong performance – 17::2!
Third in the table is Romania, fourth is North Macedonia, fifth is Iceland and Liechtenstein is in last place with one point. Hans Flick’s charges will play their next match on 8 October, when they will host the Romanians at home.
