The WTA 1000 tournament started in Toronto, Canada, on 8 August. 5 Czech names entered the main draw. Only Karolina Pliskova is among the seeded players. Barbora Krejcikova and Petra Kvitova also played the tournament without qualification. On the other hand, thanks to qualification, Marie Bouzkova was introduced and Tereza Martincova will play.

Let’s start with Marie Bouzkova, who is having a good week. I will remind you, for example, clearly the best result of all Czech women at Wimbledon, or about a week ago triumph at the tournament in Prague. At the start in Canada she met a solid Rybakinova, who is ranked 20 places higher, and after a three-set battle it was the Kazakh player who advanced. Maria will thus get a moment of well-deserved rest.

Last night the spectators witnessed the Czech-Moravian derby. The match between Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Krejcikova. The match had no favourite both in terms of odds and in terms of position or form. However, the match was clearly dominated by the taller and better serving Pliskova with 6::3 and 6::4.

Pliskova helped herself with seven aces and also had a better success rate of balls won after the first serve. Krejcikova thus fell against Karolina Pliskova for the fourth time in her career, winning only one set.

Petra Kvitova also completed her three-set battle early in the morning. She faced Alison Riske and after 2::6, 6::4 and 3::6 sets, she is also out of the tournament in the opening round, just like her compatriots Krejcikova and Bouzkova. Kvitova was the favourite of the match, but she offered her opponent 13 break point opportunities and that was simply too much.

Tereza Martincova is still waiting for her opening round match after a successful qualification. She will play today at 23:00 our time. Her opponent will be Belinda Bencic, the 12th seed. Martincova will not have an easy time of it.

Four Czech players have played their matches so far. The only one to advance so far is Karolina Pliskova, who will face the better of Anisimova/Zhaova in the second round. The American is the big favourite. We can only hope that Karolina will be joined by Tereza Martincova and we will see a double Czech representation in the second round.
