Specifically, 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova and 23-year-old Markéta Vondroušová. After a great battle, the younger of the two talented players finally advanced and received great recognition.
It was a great battle between two talented players, but in the end the younger one advanced. But it wasn’t easy for her. There was always something going on, it was a really beautiful match.
The first set was a great tug of war. Linda Fruhvirtova got a quick 2:0 lead in the games thanks to a break, and at one point she was even up 4:2, but Markéta Vondroušová managed to get back up and twice took the younger opponent’s serve, turning the score to 5:4 in her favour.
but the 17-year-old rising star showed a strong will and a big heart. Just like her opponent, she managed to win three games in a row, taking Vondroušová’s serve twice and winning the first set 7::5.
The second set was much clearer. Vondroušová was able to gain games clearly in her favour on serve, while Fruhvirtová was losing on serve. She won only two games and lost the whole set 2::6.
The third set was almost as dramatic as the first. It was something to watch. Fruhvirt picked up from a bad second set and lost her serve early on. Vondroušová took a 3:1 lead, only to be followed by her younger compatriot.
Fruhvirtova was able to win five games in a row to take the third set 6:3 not only to win the set, but also to win the match and advance to the Grand Slam semi-finals. This despite eleven double faults.
The official channel of the Australian Open named Fruhvirt as the new teen queen after the sensational win. And no wonder. The current Grand Slam high was the second round at the US Open. Now she’s making her debut in Melbourne.
It’s already clear that Fruhvirt can look forward to moving up the rankings. She is currently ranked 82nd, however, she is ranked 51st in the live ranking, which already includes results from the Australian Open.
In the next round, the young Czech will take on Croatia’s Donna Vekic.
