Champions League
The most tangled Champions League group. Tottenham, Sporting, Frankfurt and Marseille can advance
While the two Champions League groups are already clearly divided, with at least one advancing team in some of them, we have Group D. The most tangled and balanced group, from which all four teams can still advance.

It’s not often that all four teams can still fight for promotion before the last game in a Champions League group. But that’s exactly what happened in Group D, which had no favourites.
Frankfurt were drawn from the first basket as Europa League winners. It was joined by Tottenham, Sporting Lisbon and Marseille. A perfectly balanced group. And before the last game, here’s how it looks.
Sporting will take on Frankfurt at home on Tuesday night, Marseille will play Tottenham at the same time. And who needs to advance?
Tottenham are in the best position, with a draw enough to secure promotion. Spurs will finish first if they win, or both games end in a draw.
Sporting will go through if they don’t lose. If they win and Tottenham don’t, they finish first. Frankfurt will go through if they beat Sporting. If they win and Tottenham don’t, they finish first.
Marseille will advance if they win. In addition, if Sporting and Frankfurt end in a draw, Marseille would move up from first place.
So convoluted is the group that even Marseille from last place can still finish first in the group and go into the eighth finals in a better position. Tottenham can’t finish fourth anymore, so they are assured of Europe in the spring.
So it is Group D that offers itself as the most interesting to watch on Tuesday night and there will surely be high drama as to how it all plays out.
