A great man is leaving FC Porto, or rather its long-time manager who won seven trophies with the Portuguese giant in seven years. The most successful coach in the club’s history is parting ways not only because of a loss of confidence. What has Sergio Conceicao said about his departure?
A great man is leaving FC Porto, or rather its long-time manager who won seven trophies with the Portuguese giant in seven years. The most successful coach in the club’s history is parting ways not only because of a loss of confidence. What has Sergio Conceicao said about his departure?
Sergio Conceicao arrived at Porto in July 2017 and to date has coached 377 games on the bench of the famous Portuguese club.
The 49-year-old coach has three championship titles with Porto, four domestic cup championships, one Portuguese League Cup victory and three trophies for the winners of the local Super Cup. Bottom line, Conceicao has become the most successful coach in the club’s history.
But that era is coming to an end. Coach Conceicao is leaving Porto despite recently renewing his contract.
However, his departure was hastened by the arrival of former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas as club president.
According to the latest reports shared by well-known newspaper France 24, for example, Conceicao could head to the French top flight, specifically Olympique Marseille. In any case, what is the real reason for his demise?
“Recent events, in particular the breach of trust in a member of my coaching team, the interference in the integrity and cohesion of the team without my knowledge, have left me feeling exhausted and disappointed. I have always advocated openness and loyalty. That is why I will soon make public the truth about everything that happened,” Conceicao said.
Needless to say, Porto were 18 points behind champions Sporting Lisbon in the just concluded competition. They then lost 8 points to second-placed Benfica and will therefore play in the Europa League next season.
