The most bizarre foul of the season? Watch Real Madrid midfielder’s invisible foul. Kroos was furious, then laughed ironically
Toni Kroos received over 80 yellow cards in his career, but the last one was certainly the most bizarre. In a cup game at Elche, he saw a card for apparently blowing too hard into an opponent.
Toni Kroos received over 80 yellow cards in his career, but the last one was certainly the most bizarre. In a cup game at Elche, he saw a card for apparently blowing too hard into an opponent.
A very bad game was experienced on Thursday night by referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez. Even referees sometimes pick a bad day and are, as they say, “out of form”. And the Elche-Real Madrid game was really bad for Vazquez.
He made several bad decisions in the match, but the yellow card for Kroos was one of the most bizarre this season.
The Elche midfielder was chasing a long ball in front of his own penalty area and tried to make a ‘zidane’ in front of the pressing Kroos. But his foot slipped and he went down. Marcelo picked up the loose ball and raced into the box, the situation was 0:0 in the 78th minute.
However, a very promising Real Madrid attack was stopped by the head referee who whistled a foul on Kroos. An invisible foul, it has to be said, because the replay clearly shows that Morente fell by himself and Kroos didn’t even touch him.
What’s absolutely incomprehensible about the whole situation is the fact that the referee was standing about two metres away from the “clash” and thus had a perfect view. Yet he decided to blow the whistle and give Kroos a yellow card.
Logically, the German midfielder flew out of the box and tried to convince the referee that he hadn’t touched Morente. But Figueroa was adamant and stood by his interruption of a promising attack.
In the end, Real Madrid managed the match in extra time and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey. After the game, Kroos could only laugh at the situation and, with irony of his own, tweeted. Of course.”
