The medals are secure, what next? Vondrousova and Krejcikova and Siniakova will attack the historic gold
Jana Novotná, Helena Suková, Petra Kvitová or Radek Stepanek. These are the biggest names who have won Olympic medals. In the history of our tennis players have won 7 medals, but the most valuable one still eluded them. That may change this coming weekend.
Jana Novotná, Helena Suková, Petra Kvitová or Radek Stepanek. These are the biggest names who have won Olympic medals. In the history of our tennis players have won 7 medals, but the most valuable one still eluded them. That may change this coming weekend. We will have double finalists. What are the chances of Vondrousova and co.?
In the women’s singles there were several medal candidates. Barty, Osaka, Sabalenka, Muguruza. In our camp, Krejcikova and Pliskova had big ambitions. The failure of favourites at big tournaments is quite common in the WTA and it was no exception in Tokyo. Most of the favourites said goodbye to the tournament in the first rounds. So it was clear that the composition of the medalists would be unexpected.
Our players entered the tournament in a great way. Up to three of them advanced to the eight finals and had a perfect start. However, their dominance was subdued at this stage and only Vondrousova made it through to the quarter-finals. The native of Sokolov surprisingly knocked out Osaka and took care of one of the biggest shocks of the tournament.
With this triumph she drew attention to herself for the first time. As the tournament progressed, Vondrousova’s form increased rapidly. Her variable tennis was paying off for her opponents, she was able to avoid unnecessary mistakes and defend excellently. She also managed to win the next two duels and sovereignly fought her way to the Olympic final.
In the battle for gold, Vondrousova will face Belinda Bencic. The Swiss is also a surprise finalist. The 12th player in the world has been performing well here and has made great use of the easier draw.
It will be the final of a lifetime for both tennis players. Their chances of winning the Olympic title are absolutely even. In their matches, it’s 1:1, with both players practising fluent, technical tennis. The Swiss has spent a few more hours on court, which may be a slight advantage for Vondrousova. Tough conditions have already destroyed the Olympic dream for many players.
Physical fitness, mental resilience and mastery of key moments will be crucial aspects of the final. Vondrousova showed during the tournament that she does not lack these attributes. Her performance is top-notch, she is in the form of her life. She has a chance that will probably never come again. She has one last step to take to become immortal and end her fairytale ride with a well-deserved happy ending.
Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova can also win Olympic gold. The Czech-Moravian pair went into the tournament as clear favourites. One of the best doubles pairs, winners of several Grand Slams. They were in great form.
But their road was a thorny one. The last three matches had to be fought in a decisive supertiebreak. In the quarter-finals, they were one step away from elimination. But they showed tremendous mental strength and literally earned their way to the final.
They are now assured of a medal and can go into the final in relative peace. Especially for Krejcikova this medal will be very valuable. She was devastated and heartbroken after her singles elimination. However, in the doubles she and her teammate fixed her appetite and she can become the Olympic champion on Sunday.
Our tennis players will face the Swiss pair of Bencicova/Golubic for the title. For the 2021 Roland Garros champion, this match will have a special appeal. Krejcikova lost to Bencic in the eighth round. Perfect time for revenge.
Krejcikova and Siniakova will be the clear favourites. Their opponents don’t play doubles at all on the WTA circuit. Experience, quality and time to rest clearly speak for the Czech-Moravian pair. They won’t be under such pressure anymore, winning a medal is certain. But it would be a shame not to make it to the very top. Especially when they’ll be up against players they definitely have.
Our tennis has never been as close to becoming Olympic champions as it is now. She has two tremendous opportunities. In both cases, the Czech Republic has a very solid prospect. Krejcikova and Siniakova are the clear favourites. If they play their standard, they should not miss the gold.
Vondroušová is again showing great tennis, for which none of her opponents has found an effective recipe so far. Czech tennis can already rate this Olympiad as a huge success. It’s just a question of what colour the glitter will be. Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain. Our tennis players will return as heroes and will be rightly celebrated.
