One name soon crystallized from the large group of Czech women at the Paris Grand Slam – Karolína Muchová. The twenty-six-year-old player is not among the seeded players at the French Open and she had a very difficult draw in the first round. What are her chances in today’s semifinal match?
Karolina Muchova dropped a few dozen places deeper than she was before after a disappointing 2022. This year, she’s trying to make a comeback and succeeding. Thanks to the current Grand Slam, even very successfully.
Meanwhile, the events at Roland Garros started with a very tough first round match for her. She came up against a top ten player in the WTA rankings, Greece’s Sakkari, and beat her thanks to some great set finishes. The 7::6, 7::5 win started a great run for Mucha at the second Grand Slam of the season.
The native of Olomouc defeated the Argentinian Podoroska in three sets, managed a rematch against Begu and dominated against the young Russian Avanesian. By reaching the quarter-finals, it was clear that this year’s clay grand slam would be successful for the likeable Czech.
However, the colourful Czech didn’t stay in the quarter-finals and didn’t let her progress to the semi-finals be taken away from her after she took the end of the first set against Russia’s Pavlyuchenkova. She produced fewer errors than her opponent and gained valuable experience, playing on Philippe Chartrier’s court for the first time in her life. And by succeeding on it, she gained valuable points in the WTA rankings.
It is already clear that her successful French Open journey will catapult her back to the nineteenth position of the ranking, which has been her maximum so far. And she may not stay at that position, although today’s opponent commands respect.
Aryna Sabalenka
The Belarusian tennis player is having a great year. The current world number two has played in eight tournaments and made the finals in five of them. She won the Australian Open and at the Madrid Tennis Event she also took on the world number one, Poland’s Swiatek, in the final.
And her form at the Roland Open is graduating. In the semi-finals, she took on Ukraine’s Svitolina, who is showing great tennis since her return to the courts. Sabalenka won praise for her great backhands and called her match against the Ukrainian her best ever.
Finally ..
One of the biggest matches of her career awaits Karolina Muchova. The Grand Slam semi-final is her best so far. She played in it at the Australian Open 2021, in coronavirus conditions. She can enjoy it to the fullest tonight in Paris.
Her opponent will be the clear favourite for the match, she has done much more than the Czech this year and has spent significantly less time on the courts in her Roland Garros career so far. Still, let’s hope that the Czech lioness will win the support of the crowd and fight for her first career Grand Slam final.
The match is scheduled for today after three o’clock at the most prestigious tennis address in Paris, the Philippe Chatrier court.
