The main challenger to Alcaraz? Greece’s Tsitsipas is already in the quarterfinals in Madrid
The Madrid Open knows its quarter-finalists. One of them is the four-seeded Greek Tsitsipas. His journey through the tournament has already been quite difficult. How did he see his eight-final match and what opponent can he look forward to next?
The Madrid Open knows its quarter-finalists. One of them is the four-seeded Greek Tsitsipas. His journey through the tournament has already been quite difficult. How did he see his eight-final match and what opponent can he look forward to next?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is now among the last eight tennis players at the Madrid Masters, but he struggled in his very first match at the Spanish tennis event. In it, the world number five player ran into former world number three, Austrian Thiem.
The match was decided by a very good third set, in which Tsitsipas had to fight off his opponent’s break points in a critical 5:5 situation. A very solid tennis story for a first match.
The second opponent for Tsitsipas in Madrid was the Argentine Baez. Also against the player number 31 in the ATP rankings, the 24-year-old Tsitsipas needed three sets. In this match, the Greek won the deciding set 6::3. The decider was, as it usually happens in tennis, one game – a break to 5::3.
Eighth round
We have already described most of the eight-final matches, but we owe you Tsitsipas’ one. The Greek met the home tennis player in his eight-final match. Zapata Miralles. Tsitsipas knows that playing on clay against Spanish tennis players of his type is never easy.
“In some games when I served I found my opponent’s game very good, I don’t think I had a high success rate with my serve,” he paid tribute to his Spanish rival in an interview with the tournament’s official website.
The statistics of the match against Miralles show that the Greek won 67% of the points after his first serve. This is indeed a noticeable drop compared to previous matches. Against Baez and Thiem, Tsitsipas scored 75 and 88% respectively in this indicator. However, it should be added that the Greek dominated the home player’s serve in the match against the Spaniard and thus had no problem winning the match.
He gradually improved in the eight-final match. He subjected his game from the beginning of the match to criticism, calling it slightly chaotic. Later, however, Tsitsipas was able to concentrate better on individual balls and found the game setup he had been searching for since the beginning of the duel. He clearly won the duel 6: 3, 6: 1.
Who will he face next?
Stefanos Tsitsipas also knows his next opponent. It will be the German lucky loser Struff. “He often comes to the net and attacks, I know exactly what to expect. Against players like this, good preparation is always very important,” says the Greek looking forward to the quarter-final battle. It shouldn’t be his last in Madrid. We will see on Thursday afternoon.
