The Premier League season is in its third quarter, with Arsenal in the lead and seven teams separated by just five points at the bottom. What does the situation look like at the bottom and what are the prospects for each team?

14. place – Bournemouth (13 points)

The pre-season top favourite for relegation is doing decently so far. They troubled Tottenham in the last round and are playing some nice football under new coach Gary O’Neill. On paper, Bournemouth have a Championship squad, so let’s see if they can keep up.

15. place – Leeds (12 points)

Leeds have jumped off the bottom of the table thanks to an unexpected triumph at Anfield, but are otherwise struggling. A leaky defence, an attack without a goalscorer, The Whites only benefit from the loyalty of their fans. Patrick Bamford has to shoot, or Leeds will have a very difficult time.

16. place – Aston Villa (12 points)

A shameful placing for a squad that on paper belongs in the top ten. Nothing worked under Steven Gerrard, now the experienced Unai Emery has taken over the team.

The Villans will probably save themselves, but if they finish worse than tenth, it’s time to think whether it’s worth investing such sums.

17. place – Southampton (13 points)

Saints have not had an ideal start, on the other hand, only Liverpool await them out of the big six in the remaining six rounds to the mid-season.

Southampton’s fate will be in the hands of James Ward-Prowse. If he gets his bearings, salvation and the future course of the English top flight should not be a problem.

18. place – Leicester (11 points)

Like the Villans, the Foxes will go up. Or rather, based on paper assumptions and predictions, they should. However, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison are in form and going forward, Leicester should have a clear goal – not just to save themselves, but to attack the top ten. Anything else would be a failure, although the defence hasn’t been working too well so far.

19. place – Wolverhampton (9 points)

Wolves have been slowly regressing since their promotion to the Premier League, but this year it’s been extreme. The attack isn’t working at all, with only the excellent Ruben Neves keeping the club two points from salvation. Wolverhampton need to start playing and more importantly – scoring goals. Otherwise it’s going to be a big mess. In 13 rounds, this team has scored only six times.

20. place – Nottingham Forest (8 points)

Despite a massive summer strengthening, Nottingham seem to be a real adept at relegation back to the second league. The defence is lacklustre, the attack is floundering despite the big names. Two lucky wins so far, otherwise nothing. Nottingham were supposed to revive the league, but failed to do so. At least for now.

Brentford and Fulham could also be relegated in the second half of the season, but both clubs are doing better than expected.
