The Leicester sale continues. Winger Harvey Barnes is expected to join Newcastle
Leicester, after relegation from the Premier League, started to sell their best players and James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and Caglar Söyüncü are gone. Now it should be the turn of the team’s top scorer Harvey Barnes, whose signing, according to The Telegraph, is the closest to Newcastle after a big fight.
The Burnley native has been at Leicester since the age of 10, having only gone on a couple of short loan spells before getting his chance in the A-team in January 2019.
Since then, he has played 187 games, scoring 45 goals and assisting a further 32. But in terms of goals, last season was by far his best, as he scored 13 times and was therefore the Foxes’ top scorer.
However, apart from the 10 goals of James Maddison, who joined Tottenham, no one has joined this pair of Englishmen in a significant way, which was also one of the reasons for relegation. Leicester scored a total of 51 league goals, which is the 10th best number of all teams in the Premier League. However, the defence was on fire.
A winless streak, which started with a loss to Manchester United, then decided that Leicester’s fascinating run in the Premier League was over, at least for a while.
The unassuming Barnes
But who the Championship should definitely not concern is Barnes, who is not filling the headlines, but is improving match by match, as evidenced by the huge interest in his services.
Three English clubs West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle were the most interested in the 24-year-old winger. In the end, however, the latter club should win this duel, which should pay Leicester around 40 million pounds for Barnes.
The skilful midfielder is no so-called gamechanger, at least not yet, but with his honest work he can work his way up. At Newcastle he could have a great environment for that, with the club also facing European Cups, a quality wider squad is so needed and Barnes is perfect for that.
Personally, he reminds me a lot of the London native who made a big name for himself at Chelsea. They are none other than Joe Cole, who has also made 56 starts for the England national team and is now working with the Blues with the youth.
