Denver was on the chase and Jokic had a triple-double
The Lakers controlled the first half and built a 15-point lead. But inexplicably, they squandered that hard-earned lead in the second half. The defending champions consolidated their defense and made a great chase.
Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr. and Nikola Jokic, who is the most serious candidate to win the third MVP of the season for the best player of the regular season. In this game, he showed that he is the rightful favourite to win this most valuable individual trophy.
He destroyed the Lakers with 27 points in 41 minutes on the floor, excelled under the basket with 20 rebounds, dished out 10 accurate assists and committed only two turnovers during the entire game. For Jokic, it was his 17th triple-double of the playoffs. He recorded 10 in last year’s playoff run alone.
Jokic was complemented with 22 points by Michael Porter Jr. who played a very important role in the last seconds of the game. This player prevented a 3-point shot attempt by Lebron James, who could have turned the game in favor of the Lakers with 13 seconds left, and Jamal Murray added 20 points, although he missed his first 13 shots of the game.
The Lakers were traditionally pulled by the trio of Davis, James and Russell. Anthony Davis was the game’s leading scorer with 32 points, Lebron added 26 points, 8 rebounds and 12 assists and D’Angelo Russell added 23 points, helped by 7 three-point baskets on 11 shot attempts.
However, the collapse the Lakers showed in the second half is something to behold. One of the best units in NBA history now has to win both at Crypto.com Arena. They are now 0-2 in the series, and if they fail in their home opener, they will stand over the precipice of elimination.
The team around Lebron James, however, will have a terribly difficult time of it. Denver hasn’t beaten them in their last 10 meetings. Their last win over this team was 494 days ago. James, after all, is no longer 30 to pull off a 50-point performance.
