World golf fans have their eyes on the last tournament of the season, which will be played at the private East Lake course in Georgia, USA. The top 30 players in the season-long FedEx Cup rankings will battle it out not only for the championship and the famous trophy, but also for the fabulous prize money of US$15 million. Who will take over as PGA Tour champion on Sunday?
Due to a series of postponed tournaments from last season due to a worldwide pandemic, the best golfers have had the longest year in the history of the PGA Tour series. Who do the bookies trust most ahead of the final battle for the King of Golf?
Last year’s champion was American Dustin Johnson, who capped off a phenomenal season by also winning the green jacket at the most famous major tournament , The Masters. Before him, Jordan Spieth and Rory Mcllroy were the top contenders, but none of them are among the favourites this time, according to the experts’ predictions.
Determining the biggest favourite in golf is a job for true connoisseurs. The fact that the last event on the PGA Tour is now down to the top 30 makes the task a little easier.
Experts are calling the pair of Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay as the most likely to win the coveted silver trophy at odds of 4:1. In third place is the hot favourite with 5:1 odds, Bryson DeChambeau.
It was DeChambeau and Cantlay who put on a luxury show at the BMW Championship last week. The latter had to wait until the sixth hole of the shootout to claim his victory. Thanks to his undoubtedly superior putting skills, Patrick Cantlay is ahead of his rival.
Tony Finau is by a wide margin at 15::1, with Justin Thomas in fifth place at 16::1. Last year’s winner Dustin Johnson is only sixth in the computer model’s predictions, with odds of 25::1. Exactly identical odds then point to the trio of Cameron Smith, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.
The exact order with individual odds was determined by the SportsLine computer model. In total, the model evaluated 10,000 simulations to determine the odds of the overall PGA Tour winner.
The points that players have accumulated in the FedEx Cup rankings so far during the season are converted into the starting score that golfers will take to the fairways on Thursday. With Cantlay’s win at the BMW Championship, the American secured a starting score of -10. Tony Finau will head to the Leaderboard at eight shots under par, while DeChambeau will start at -7.
