On Monday night, Spain was rocked by an open war between Real Madrid and Barcelona, with both teams accusing each other of being the team of the former regime. Even Spain’s biggest daily newspaper MARCA weighed in.

It all started with Barcelona president Joan Laporta taking a swipe at Real Madrid at a press conference on Monday. He said that he did not understand why a club that has always been favoured by referees and that was a club of the regime was speaking out in relation to the Blaugranas corruption scandal.

But this has provoked a very strong reaction from the Real Madrid side. President Florentino Pérez has called for an attack and the club released a video last night in which he hit back at Barcelona.

“Who was the regime’s club? Camp Nou was inaugurated by Franco’s general minister, José Solís Ruiz. Barcelona awarded a gold and diamond badge to Franco. In 1965, Barcelona appointed Franco as an honorary partner of the club. Barcelona honoured Franco three times,” Real wrote in a video, for example.

“During Franco’s time Real won the title 18 times, Barca 17 times. Barcelona was saved from bankruptcy three times thanks to Franco’s interventions. Meanwhile, Real Madrid is being destroyed in a civil war – players are dying, being arrested and driven out. So who was the real club of the regime?” Real asked.

The whole situation has caused a huge uproar not only in Spain, but around the world. And even Spain’s biggest newspaper, MARCA, which is based in Madrid, took a swipe at Barcelona, and thus focuses more on Real.

“The King extends his regime, ” reports MARCA after Real Madrid’s progress to the Champions League semi-finals.

Real Madrid are reportedly not going to hold back and will not let Laporta spoil the club’s reputation. The club is thus reportedly preparing further evidence and videos that Barcelona was not particularly harmed during the previous regime either.
