The key to the championship door is held by a Liverpool legend, but on the Aston Villa bench

The English Premier League is really exciting this year. What everybody wanted in our domestic competition, a title fight in the last round, is only happening in the Islands. Before the final 38th round, the Citizens lead the league with 90 points. The Reds are just one point behind them. The team from nearby Liverpool, which has had a fantastic season this year, is in the running to win the so-called quadruple, which means winning 4 prestigious trophies in one year.

Back in February, Liverpool scored the first one, for winning the EFL Cup, if you will- the Carabao Cup. On 14 May, the fans experienced déjà vu. 85,000 came to Wembley.

Again a packed stadium, again a cup final, again a Chelsea-Liverpool match and again a victory for the men in red on penalties. The only difference was that this time it was the FA Cup. The next trophy is up for grabs for coach Klopp’s charges in the biggest event of the year, the Champions League final, where they face the famous Real Madrid on 28 May.

But in the meantime, the climax of the Premier League awaits. The final piece in the jigsaw of our Liverpool dream. For this to happen, Liverpool must not falter and need to win unconditionally while hoping for a falter from their rival. They host Wolves at Anfield. City are at home to Aston Villa.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the talk in the general public at the moment is more about a miracle than a realistic chance. City are rolling one opponent after another and nobody can imagine that they could stumble in the last round and lose everything.

That would be another, very hard, blow for Guardiola’s squad after their unlucky exit from the Champions League. However, the last game was a loss at West Ham and City may be slightly nervous. Plus, they’re playing Aston Villa in the last round.

Don’t you see any obstacles? I see two. Not just obstacles, but Liverpool legends. The first is the offensive-minded midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who has played five seasons in a red Liverpool jersey. The second, and the brighter shining one, is Steven Gerrard. A legend in the truest sense of the word. This footballer has dedicated his entire top-flight career to Liverpool.

He made his debut in 1998 and played his last game in the red jersey 17 years later, in 2015. In total, he played 504 games in which he managed to score 120 times. In 2001, he won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup with the team. Then 4 years later, he lifted the eared trophy above his head, for the winner of the Champions League. In 2006, he then celebrated winning the English Super Cup. He is unforgettably and indelibly etched in the history of this great club.

Of course, Manchester City are the overwhelming favourites to win the title. The only man who can turn it around is Gerrard, who is currently coaching Aston Villa. As he says everywhere, his thoughts are going there. But no one can tell me that his heart still beats to the beat of the anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone and that it will always remain that way.

To beat Manchester City and pass the title into the hands of his beloved Liverpool must be a beautiful vision for him. He will go into the game with maximum motivation. So will the aforementioned Coutinho. Who will eventually open the imaginary championship door and go on to win the Premier League? We will find out this Sunday.
