Germany dominated the U21 European Championship, beating the friendly Portuguese in the final by the narrowest possible margin, 1:0. Manchester City striker Lukas Nmecha scored the only goal.

The Germans were used to the final of the “Little Euros”, having reached the final in the last two tournaments (2017 and 2019), taking gold four years ago.

Portugal last reached the final six years ago, but only came away with silver.

In this year’s final, the Portuguese were the more active team from the start, but they did not fare well in the final stages. On the other side, Florian Wirtz, the hero of the German semi-final, almost opened the scoring by hitting the crossbar.

The Germans tested the Portuguese goalkeeper several more times before half-time, but without scoring.

After the change of sides, the paper favourite had already arrived. Ridle Baku found Lukas Nmecha, who toyed with the goalkeeper and cleared the ball into the open net.

After that, there were a few more chances on both sides, but no goal was scored and the trophy was lifted over the heads of the Germans again.

Why again? This is the third time they have dominated this tournament, apart from the aforementioned 2017 twelve years ago (2009).

For the Portuguese, it was the third time they had failed to reach the final, neither in 2009 nor in 1994. They will have another chance again in two years, but first they have to pass the qualification.
