Although he recently celebrated only his twenty-second birthday, he has a very interesting position in the world of white sport. Jannik Sinner is one of the crown princes of the ATP tour and is starting to rewrite historical milestones in his country.
At this year’s Wimbledon he became only the third Italian in history to reach the semi-finals. And after the current tournament in Beijing, he will equal the current record of Italian tennis.
That is Adrian Panatta’s fourth position so far in 1976. Sinner’s move to this position will unseat Rune, Tsitsipas and Rublyov in the current rankings.
Beijing ride
At the tournament in the Chinese capital, Sinner impressed with scalps of Evans or Dimitrov, but the real bombshell was the victory over the number one player of the event, Spaniard Alcaraz. Sinner also beat him thanks to this great exchange after 7:6, 6:1 sets.
Sinner’s season
A lot has been said this year about the emerging rivalry between the young players. Sinner has always modestly pointed out that he is not performing like the Spaniard.
However, he has been doing well in their matches. This is the second time this year that the South Tyrolean native has taken on Alcaraz. Alcaraz has been very impressive in Beijing so far. His previous win came in the semi-finals of the Masters in Miami in April.
Let’s add that only one tennis player besides Sinner managed to beat Alcaraz twice this year. That’s Novak Djokovic. However, he is not starting in Beijing and the Italian is facing another player in his way to the title.
The final pair with Sinner will be formed by Russian Medvedev, who will try to win his sixth title this year. Sinner is looking to fight for a third triumph on the 2023 ATP calendar.
Conclusion
The superb “five hundred” in Beijing lived up to expectations. Despite Alcaraz’s excellent form, he found his conqueror. Medvedev, in turn, has the chance to confirm that he is experiencing the most successful year of his career, albeit without winning a Grand Slam.
The final match takes on a whole new dimension with Sinner’s success and the Italian can step up to a new record for his country with a win in the final. It is Medvedev who occupies the bronze at the moment.
