The initial shock is gone! McLaren has strongly objected to false claims linked to its F1 exit
Formula 1 fans must be very relieved now. McLaren has strongly objected to false information provided by the Autosport website. The report is that German carmaker Audi was to take over all of McLaren’s activities. What does their statement say and what would it mean for more than just the stable itself?
Formula 1 fans must be very relieved now. McLaren has strongly objected to false information provided by the Autosport website. The report is that German carmaker Audi was to take over all of McLaren’s activities. What does their statement say and what would it mean for more than just the stable itself?
The Autocar website said in its article on Monday that Audi had agreed to take over the company, which would give the German carmaker complete control over not only the road cars, but also the goings-on in Formula 1.
Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche in particular have been considering entering the queen of motorsport for some time now, and taking over a team is often the most ideal alternative. However, in a statement on Monday, McLaren strongly objected to the report, calling it false.
“McLaren Group is aware of the information circulating in the media that the team has been sold to Audi. This is completely inaccurate and McLaren calls for the story to be removed,” reads the team’s official statement posted on its website.
“McLaren’s technology strategy has always included discussions about working with relevant partners and suppliers, including other carmakers. However, there have been no changes to the ownership structure of the McLaren group,” the statement also said.
Indeed, if the allegation were true, it would mean McLaren would very likely lose its Formula 1 team. It would actually be something similar to Aston Martin taking over Racing Point, or the former Force India.
The team from Woking is one of the biggest symbols of F1 and their departure would be a complete disaster for its fans and especially McLaren fans.
The founder of the British team is Bruce McLaren, who created the team in 1963. The team’s first race was three years later, on the occasion of the Monaco Grand Prix. In the past, McLaren has been driven by legends such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda and Mika Häkkinen.
The team has won eight constructors’ world championships and has also won 12 drivers’ titles. The first drivers’ title for McLaren was won by Emerson Fittipaldi in 1974. Two years later, James Hunt triumphed, with a third championship coming in 1984 thanks to Lauda.
The last championship title with McLaren was won by Lewis Hamilton in 2008.
